MER would like to spend some time celebrating the wonderful people that we have the opportunity to work with. We asked each director to answer a series of questions to allow us to get to know them better.

 

Hazel Theriault (she/her) is a museum professional passionate about inclusivity, authentic community, and science communication. She is an experienced leader, developing strong teams to create quality STEAM content and facilitate meaningful moments of discovery at DuPage Children’s Museum, Indiana State Museum, and Orlando Science Center. Hazel received her Bachelor’s degree in anthropology and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at University of Illinois. She believes that, as cultural centers, museums have a responsibility to foster social change. Her greatest hope is to make museums brave, inclusive, and empowering spaces for staff and visitors alike. She has been a board member since 2019 and currently serves as MER’s secretary.

 

What made you want to join MER?
I was excited to become more connected to our museum field and learn from the board.  Many of the folks I’ve looked up to in my career have been involved in MER or have written for the JME!

What are your dreams/goals for the organization during your tenure?
I hope that I have helped to support and form structure that can support MER’s exponential growth for years to come.

How does MER align with your personal and/or professional work?
Over my four years with MER, I have seen such intentional, caring, and focused leadership to lift up museum practitioners and connect us with each other to share ideas. I’ve seen strong commitment to DEAI work and support for marginalized museum staff and audiences. These lived values and care are the reason that serving on the MER board has been so refreshing and fulfilling.

How do you relax and recharge after a long day?
I love to curl up with my partner and our dog on the couch. We also end each day with a crossword, solidifying our reputation as exciting young people.

Who is someone you look up to?
Fairly early in my museum career, I was able to attend a workshop with (MER alumni!) Margaret Middleton, which ignited my passion for social change within museums. I’m inspired by Margaret’s commitment to inclusion and the way they lift up diverse voices in our field and beyond.
